The William Blake Congregation was founded by Simon Miles, in 1986, to celebrate the life and vision of William Blake. It is an informal, open and egalitarian group who meet annually on 28th November in the Blake Room, Tate Britain, at 1pm — to celebrate his birthday with readings, poetry, song and fellowship, repairing afterwards to the nearest pub
The congregation also meets on Blake’s deathday, 12th August, at his grave in Bunhill Fields, East London. All are welcome, bring a poem or song to share.

A William Blake Birthday Celebration
The first Stroud Festival of Poetry, Music & Storytelling Come and revel in this unique evening Festival of living visionary poets, musicians and storytellers in the spirit of the great visionary poet William Blake, on his birthday. Hear some of Blake`s poems spoken and sung. A dynamic and uplifting line-up includes Incredible String Band founder Robin Williamson and Bina Williamson; performance poet laureate of Brick Lane, Stephen Micalef; Subterraneans front man Jude Rawlins; Kirsten Morrison; `Kings Cross laureate` Aidan Andrew Dun; Firesprings storytellers from Bath; Stroud’s own Phoenix trio (with didgeridoo and percussion); Rick Vick; Jeff Cloves, Dennis Gould and Adam Horovitz. There will be live drumming in the intervals to keep you on your toes!

Adrian Mitchell was one of the first to respond to our invitation to contribute to the William Blake Birthday Book, with his poem “William Blake says: Everything that Lives is Holy”

The original pages of The William Blake Birthday Book are on exhibition at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, until 22nd February 2009.

The work is in the main corridor (main entrance, through the atrium and turn left) and is open daily 8am to 6pm

This celebration of William Blake presents a multi-media event by poets, musicians and artists inspired by his continuing legacy in contemporary artforms. The participants are all contributors to the William Blake Birthday Book, which has acted as a focus to bring together this group of creative people.
